Keep Your Belongings Safe During An Open House

Open houses are a great way to introduce your home to buyers. But unfortunately, your open house might attract people who have no interest in buying your property (or anything, for that matter), and instead are looking for a quick and easy way to burglarize your home.

Luckily, there are steps you can take to protect your home (and everything in it). A recent article from Realtor.com outlined tips for keeping your belongings safe during an open house, including:

  • Hide your medications. Medications have a high appeal to would-be thieves. If you have any medications with the potential for abuse (including prescription painkillers, sleep aids, and anti-anxiety medications or over-the-counter cough suppressants or cold medications), it’s important to keep them out of sight and securely locked away.
  • Secure your belongings. You might think hiding your valuables is good enough. But thieves will have no problem searching for items to steal—so if you want to make sure your items are secure, they should be locked away (either in a safe, a locked drawer, or a trunk). If you don’t have any way to secure your most valuable items, ask if you can bring them over to a friend or family member’s house before the open house.
  • Ask your real estate agent for back up. During an open house, you’re likely going to have a lot of people coming in and out of your home—and it may be difficult for one person to keep eyes on them all. Ask your real estate agent if it would be possible to have an additional agent to keep an eye on guests, or a way to make sure guests aren’t just wandering around unattended.

The vast majority of open houses go off without a hitch (or a burglary!). But still, it’s better to be safe than sorry—so make sure you take the steps necessary to keep your belongings safe.
